Before getting a floor lamp, there are some things to consider. Firstly, what kind of floor lamps do you want? Do you want these lamps for decoration purposes, or do you intend to do some serious reading with it? Your purpose will determine what kind of bulb you should get for it. For proper reading, you would need a higher wattage bulb, but for decorative purposes just get a low wattage bulb and it will serve its purpose.
Task Lighting- Use table lamps or free standing lamps for working on individual projects such as a puzzle, game, paper, crocheting or other hobby. Ideally, living room lamps should be set slightly behind and to the left or right of the area being illuminated so the light can come from behind the person's shoulder and pour light on towards the project at hand. Use smaller track lighting fixtures or other low-level lighting agents for computers and television viewing. This avoids glare and allows the screen its proper image display.
For the living room, choose a lamp shade made of fabric or slightly opaque paper to provide warm glow in the room. If to be placed near a television, an opaque shade can be chosen to reduce glare. For a modern look, drum shades may be used and if traditional look is preferred, conical shades are recommended. For reading purposes, the lamp's bulb must be at least 60 Watts; a dimmer or three0way bulb can be used for modulating the brightness.
