The glow of candlelight and firelight glow goes back to our oldest ancestors, and a fireplaces offers another form of flickering light and homey ambiance. We contain the heat, smoke, and lighting of a fire within a fireplace, directing the heat and light into the living room but diverting the smoke out the chimney or similar method. To get the same look, you can have a gas or electric log that offers the same lighting and environment as a traditional wood-burning fireplace without the smoke or smell of burning wood.
For the living room, choose a lamp shade made of fabric or slightly opaque paper to provide warm glow in the room. If to be placed near a television, an opaque shade can be chosen to reduce glare. For a modern look, drum shades may be used and if traditional look is preferred, conical shades are recommended. For reading purposes, the lamp's bulb must be at least 60 Watts; a dimmer or three0way bulb can be used for modulating the brightness.
That being said, remember that overhead lighting is great so long as it is accompanied by additional task lighting such as wall sconces or reading lamps. This is to avoid casting shadows, creating glare, and causing eyestrain from insufficient lighting at eye level.
