The first type of furniture was made of leather. The leather was stretched without any padding under it for support. However, later, during the Italian Renaissance, chairs were cushioned with leather, embroidery, and velvet, and the French chairs were the ornate ones with tapestries and embroideries. The application of springs in the sofa is fairly a modern concept. The padding in sofas is usually made of hair, flock, foam, fiber, rubber and kapok, while some of the sofa coverings may be made out of woven fabrics, plastics, synthetic leather and leather. In fact, there are thousands of sofas, sectional sofas and other home furniture in the market from which to choose.
When a household has pets, fabric furniture can be a challenge to maintain. Sofas in households with pets is usually selected with the understanding that pets will spend time on the furniture and shed. When this is the case one will want to select a material such as Semi-Annilene or Pigmented leather which is easily maintained and will not retain pet hair and dander.
Sofas often are in high traffic rooms and undergo daily use and abuse by members of a household. However, when selecting a sofa many people select a design and fabric that is not as durable as other fabrics may be for the location where the sofa will be placed. Knowing the location where one will be placing a sofa and the amount of use it will receive is a big factor in selecting the perfect sofa.
