Artificial lighting is the primary source of nighttime lighting in the typical home, and many of us use it for a variety of evening and late night activities. This may include reading, writing, using the computer, watching television, enjoying movies, or late night talks with special friends and family members. A flip of a switch can add or remove illumination as desired to create almost any mood or support any function.
Living room lighting lends itself to being open to many different lighting sources and your mix of indoor light fixtures and fittings should accommodate a wide spectrum of moods and activities.
That being said, remember that overhead lighting is great so long as it is accompanied by additional task lighting such as wall sconces or reading lamps. This is to avoid casting shadows, creating glare, and causing eyestrain from insufficient lighting at eye level.
