Do not line all your furniture up against walls. This will create a stale, square look. Instead, pull the chairs and couch away from the walls and set lamps, flowers, or tall and narrow statuettes behind the furniture. This adds an extra dimension to your living room. Deciding how you will use your living room will help you choose what furniture and d?cor would be best. Do you need a lot of open space for room to play the Wii? Will it be a lounge room to read, watch TV, play board games, or do yoga? Will you be hosting large groups of people? A TV room could have a large flat-screen mounted on the wall in front of an open space. A lounge room will have plenty of cushioned chairs or bean bags with a table perfect for setting up games or holding snacks and drinks.
The living room will also often be used for curling up with a good book. For this space, one might want to set something apart, generally with an armchair, an ottoman and an area rug. This can designate a certain area of the room as set apart for a quiet, comfortable space. The area rug can help to provide depth to that area of the room, marking it as a special place for quiet and enjoyable reading or private reflection.
Perhaps the most important part of designing an effective living room is making sure that there is enough space between all of these areas for anyone to move comfortably. If there is not, the room will feel crowded and it will be annoying for anyone to move through the room as they may have to ask others to move. This can disrupt the unity and the comfortable setting the room is supposed to provide and this cannot be considered a success with the design.
