Artificial lighting is the primary source of nighttime lighting in the typical home, and many of us use it for a variety of evening and late night activities. This may include reading, writing, using the computer, watching television, enjoying movies, or late night talks with special friends and family members. A flip of a switch can add or remove illumination as desired to create almost any mood or support any function.
The next thing to do is to carefully select the bulbs. Unlike the kitchen or bathroom, the color of the light in the living room should be warm and yellow not stark white so choose the light bulbs accordingly. CFL (Compact Fluorescent Lights) and LEDs are more energy-efficient than conventional incandescent bulbs and can result in significant savings in the long run.
For the living room, choose a lamp shade made of fabric or slightly opaque paper to provide warm glow in the room. If to be placed near a television, an opaque shade can be chosen to reduce glare. For a modern look, drum shades may be used and if traditional look is preferred, conical shades are recommended. For reading purposes, the lamp's bulb must be at least 60 Watts; a dimmer or three0way bulb can be used for modulating the brightness.
