There are two basic designs, one that incorporates a back support and one that is designed to neatly fit under a desk. These chairs are great for those of us that spend long hours in front of a computer or work in a setting where you are going from room to room and need to take the pressure off your feet (like a doctors office). If you don't have one but are interested, we suggest that you find a retailer that sells them and try one out. When you decide that you'd like to purchase one, it is a good idea to check prices on-line as they are often 10% to 30% less expensive and often with free delivery.
When you look for any chair with moving parts, go to a showroom and try it out first. Does the mechanism move smoothly, without any grinding or bumps? How difficult is it to move? Be sure to sit in the chair the way you will at home. Check the comfort, the level of the headrest, and move the footrest and any other moveable parts. Since moving parts get more wear than the rest of the chair, you want to be sure they'll hold up to use.
Recliners these days can have all kinds of options installed. Heat, massage, rockers, swivel. . . even mini-fridges if you want to get real fancy! Just remember that the more options you have, the more there is to go wrong. Sometimes sticking with a timeless style will suit you better than having the newest thing the chair engineers can come up with.
