When it's not possible to find space for a big enough standard-style sofa, consider a corner sofa. These usually sit along two walls, with a section which allows it to turn the corner rather than being broken up into two sofas. These typically offer a lot of seating space, and are good for a grand appearance in a large room. Smaller rooms, however, may be able to accommodate a shorter corner sofa.
Sofas often are in high traffic rooms and undergo daily use and abuse by members of a household. However, when selecting a sofa many people select a design and fabric that is not as durable as other fabrics may be for the location where the sofa will be placed. Knowing the location where one will be placing a sofa and the amount of use it will receive is a big factor in selecting the perfect sofa.
If the area is small, you'll be forced to choose a sofa which is less bulky and of a lighter colour to give the illusion of more space. If you opt for a large, dark sofa, in a small space, the room will look unbalanced. There's no way to get rid of this inconvenient unless, on the opposite side of the room, you place a piece of furniture looking just as big and harsh, but the results won't be that good.
